Understanding Elastography
Elastography is considered a non-invasive modality which has shown to be valuable in differentiating benign and malignant breast lesions on the basis of their stiffness. A transducer delivers high-intensity pulses that produce shear waves, which create a higher-quality image and allows our radiologist to asses the elasticity of the tissue.
Breast Mass Using Elastography
How Does Elastography Work?
During an elastography exam, a specialized ultrasound probe is used to apply gentle pressure to the breast tissue. This pressure creates small deformations within the tissue, which are measured by the ultrasound machine. By analyzing how the tissue responds to this pressure, our radiologists can assess the elasticity of the tissue.
Why is Elastography Used?
Elastography provides valuable information about the texture and composition of breast tissue. In particular, it can help distinguish between normal tissue, benign masses, and potentially cancerous lesions. This additional information enhances our ability to accurately diagnose breast conditions, leading to better outcomes for our patients.
How to Prepare for Elastography:
Preparing for an elastography exam is simple and straightforward. Here are a few key steps to follow:
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: You may be asked to remove clothing from the waist up, so wear something comfortable and easy to remove.
- Avoid Lotions and Creams: To ensure optimal imaging quality, please avoid applying lotions, creams, or powders to your chest area on the day of your appointment.
- Inform Your Technologist: If you have any medical implants or conditions that may affect the exam, please inform your technologist before the procedure begins.
- Relax and Stay Still: During the elastography exam, it’s essential to remain as relaxed and still as possible. This helps our technologists obtain clear and accurate images.
- Ask Questions: If you have any concerns or questions about the elastography procedure, don’t hesitate to ask our staff. We’re here to ensure your comfort and confidence throughout the process.
What to Expect During the Exam:
Elastography is a painless and non-invasive procedure that typically takes just a few minutes to complete. You’ll lie comfortably on an examination table while our technologist gently moves the ultrasound probe over your breast tissue.
After the Exam:
After the elastography exam, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Our radiologists will analyze the images and share the results with your referring physician.
