How Does Breast Ultrasound Work?

During a breast ultrasound exam, high-frequency sound waves are used to create detailed images of the internal structures of the breast. Unlike mammography, which uses X-rays to capture images of the breast tissue, ultrasound does not involve radiation. Instead, it relies on sound waves to produce real-time images that can help our radiologists assess the health of the breast tissue.

Why is Breast Ultrasound Used?

Breast ultrasound is often used in conjunction with other imaging techniques, such as mammography or MRI, to:

• Further Evaluate Abnormalities: Ultrasound can provide additional information about breast abnormalities detected on mammograms or clinical exams, helping to determine whether further evaluation or biopsy is necessary.
• Assess Breast Lumps: Ultrasound is particularly useful for evaluating breast lumps, determining whether they are fluid-filled cysts or solid masses.

How to Prepare for Breast Ultrasound:

Preparing for a breast ultrasound exam is simple and typically requires no special preparation. Here are a few important points to keep in mind:

1. Wear Comfortable Clothing: You may be asked to remove clothing from the waist up, so wear something comfortable and easy to remove.
2. Inform Your Technologist: If you have breast implants or any relevant medical history, please inform your technologist before the exam begins.
3. Relax and Stay Still: During the ultrasound exam, you will be asked to lie on an examination table while the technologist moves a handheld probe over your breast tissue. It’s essential to remain as relaxed and still as possible to ensure clear and accurate images.

What to Expect During the Exam:

During the breast ultrasound exam, a water-based gel will be applied to your skin to help transmit the sound waves. The technologist will then gently move the ultrasound probe over your breast tissue, capturing images from various angles. The procedure is painless and typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

After the Exam:

After your breast ultrasound exam, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Our radiologists will analyze the images and share the results with your healthcare provider.
